I'd appreciate it if you could tell me what to do: My dad
(age 85) switched from Windows 95 to an iMac with a 17-inch wide
screen. Great. When he set it up, his eyes missed a serious
typo in his name (q's instead of a's). I was able to fix
it via the root user process, and that went OK, but there are
still places where my dad's name has the typo, e.g., the short
name, and ___'s computer. Can that be changed?
I live in CA and he is in Washington, so I don't have his
computer in front of me, but I think the short name, or the
folder with the house in Users, still has his name wrong.
Any suggestions?
Sharon
That's a tough one. I don't think there's any way to change the short
name.
Still, it would be really easy to just create a new account spelled the
way you like it, copy the contents of the current (misspelled) Home
folder into it, and then delete the old account. You would do all of
this in the Accounts panel of System Preferences; step-by-step
instructions are in Mac
OS X: The Missing Manual, 2nd Edition.
